Mauna Loa erupted again this year after 38 years. Pictures taken of the volcano by residents of Big Island, Hawaii, truly capture the fierce and fearsome beauty of nature.
In Hawaiian culture, Pele, the goddess of volcanoes and fire is believed to be the creator of the Hawaiian Islands. Her symbolism in both destruction and creation is what leaves me in wonder about her story. These cycles are essential to life – whether it is figurative or literal, we are in an ongoing process of death and rebirth.

Something that leaves me quite astounded when volcanoes erupt in Hawaii is a phenomenon where people capture forms of Pele in the volcanic fire. Inspired by these photos, I drew Pele’s Dance referencing from photos posted by Chuck Moore.
History is alive and well in Hawaii, and it demands to be seen.
